Welcome to this month's issue of the DOUBLE EAGLE FLYER, your quarterly newsletter to keep you up to date on the latest information and happenings at Double Eagle Enterprises.
Road Trip
Double Eagle Enterprises hit the road in April and May. We had a great time as we held our first book signing tour in South Georgia in quite some time. We got to see some old friends and meet some new ones. Thankfully, the weather was nice most of the time, but we were glad to get back to North Carolina where it was a bit cooler.
Here are some of the highlights of our latest road trip.
Vidalia, Georgia: We arrived in Vidalia on April 24, 2008 to be sure that we got a parking space for our travel trailer. It’s a good thing we did because the reserved spaces for the festival were already filled. The Vidalia City Chamber of Commerce was very helpful and provided us with a list of local campgrounds where we might be able to find a place to camp. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Joyce’s alma mater, Brewton Parker College at Mount Vernon, Georgia, had a dozen or so parking spaces in their campus campground. We made the arrangements on the telephone and drove 12 miles to a nice campsite.
The next day we set up at the Vidalia Onion Festival vendors grounds. We spent two days there and had an opportunity to meet some of our classmates from Baxley and Surrency. Our book sales were excellent!
Okefenokee Swamp Park: On May 3, 2008 we visited the Okefenokee Swamp Park for our second book signing of the trip. We have had the pleasure of doing a book signing once before as well as visiting the park several times. It was good to see the folks at the park again and all of the people who turned out for the occasion.
We met several people from all over South Georgia and some from out of state. Our books were well received and we had a very successful book signing. We would like to thank the folks at Okefenokee Swamp Park for hosting us and giving us another opportunity to meet the folks who visit them. Okefenokee Swamp Park has been one of our best-selling outlets over the past several years.
Hazlehurst, Georgia: The Jeff Davis County Library was our host for this event. William did a reading from Circuit Rider and Life with Charlie. Both readings were well received and William signed a few books. One young couple at the signing was very encouraging. They told us that they had read River Pilot, our first publication, several times. It is always encouraging to know that people read and appreciate your work.
The folks at the library had worked really hard to let folks know that we were visiting. The event had been placed in the local newspaper, on the radio, and of course advertised at the library. We had a very favorable turn out and got to meet a few folks who were from out of town.
Mrs. Mary Ann Ellis, who writes a weekly column for The Baxley News Banner, was present and we had an opportunity to talk for just a few minutes. She gave us a very favorable review in her column of the next week. We would like to thank Mrs. Ellis for the nice visit and the excellent things she had to say in her column.
We would like to thank the folks at Jeff Davis County Library and the Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce for their assistance in providing us with a campsite at Towns Bluff Landing. We also appreciate the business we did with the Altamaha Heritage Center.
Baxley, Georgia: Our hometown is always a welcome visit. Helen Gardner at The Baxley News Banner gave us a warm welcome and suggested that we do an interview with their feature writer, René O’Quinn. We would like to thank René and Helen for their interest and help in promoting our work and our books.
The folks at the Appling County Heritage Center informed us they had sold some books and needed to restock. As always, it is a privilege and the joy to visit with them and supply books for local folks with interest in the history of Appling County. Thanks to the folks at the Appling County Heritage Center– both employees and volunteers.
River Pilot is the story of William Augustus Reynolds (Gus), a man who had river mud in his veins. Together with other men of his time, Gus struggles to make a living as they cut trees from the river swamp, build rafts, and float them down river. River Pilot is the first in a trilogy of books by William V. Reynolds.
